Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of scandal online about employers asking for peoples Facebook passwords during interviews. Ridiculous right? It’s illegal to ask about sexual orientation, marital status or Religious beliefs yet some people think it’s OK to snoop through your private message and pokes…

We all know that employers check out potential employees Facebook pages which in my opinion is acceptable enough, it’s creeping AKA “researching” but we all do it. Asking for passwords takes things to a new level though.

Over the last two years asking for passwords has become an increasing trend in the US with employers seeking more personal information before hiring. After a surge in these reports Facebook have stated that asking employees or potential employees for their passwords in a violation of privacy and Facebook terms of use.

Erin Egan, Facebook’s privacy officer, warned employers participating in the above that “If you are a Facebook user, you should never have to share your password,” Erin Egan wrote. “This practice undermines the privacy expectations and the security of both the user and the user’s friends,” wrote Facebook chief privacy officer Erin Egan. “It also potentially exposes the employer who seeks this access to unanticipated legal liability.”

What would you do if you were in the middle of an interview and an employer asked for your Facebook password? Would you give it to them?
